Interview with Soorya
Krishnamoorthy
Soorya Krishnamoorthy
talks about the plays that deserted its audience and indulged
in kapada budhi jeevi vyaayaamam. The playwrights of
today should think about the success of the old KPAC plays.
We should bring back the audience.
Interview
Soorya Krishna Moorthy`s play Melvilasom was
a huge success across Europe. The 100th staging was on April
13. a remarkable achievement for an amateur play. It had 2
Gulf tours, Europe, Saudi Arabia, All Kerala and All India
tours. Coming July Melvilasam will be playing
in Delhi. Soorya Krishna Moorthy talked to Manambur Suresh
in London about the play and the whole theatre movement in
Kerala. This is an extract of the interview:
SKM: When we played in Christ College, Irinjaalakkuda, the
students watched the play in silence. The principal later
said that students seldom watched a play in silence. They
always made noise. Later we learned the reason for this: a
week before the staging of the play a student had committed
suicide! The other students had abused him by calling his
caste name, leading to his suicide. The central theme of the
play struck an emphatic emotional chord with the audience.
??MS: Today plays from Kerala are far removed from people
and their life. On one side this pseudo intellectual plays
and on the other the cheap over romantic commercial plays.
SKM: True. These plays are far removed from people. I have
met many people who have seen this play many times. We can
bring these people back to theatre. KPAC plays were a huge
success. Thulaabhaaram, Aswamedham, Puthiyaakaasam Puthiyabhoomi
etc.
?? MS:Those plays had a great underlying ideology too?
Yes. Thats true. Plays should move closer to people.
I have an idea to build a theatre for plays in Thiruvananthapuram
to accommodate 100 to 150 people. That should accommodate
all good plays. Yes, the plays should come back to people.
