DUBAI: Two people died while five others sustained moderate to severe injuries in accidents since Tuesday night, Dubai Police's Traffic Department announced on Thursday.

So far, 14 people have lost their lives in road accidents in Dubai this month, bringing the total from the beginning of the year to 25.

Major-General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, director of the department, said the first accident occurred at 9.30pm on Tuesday on a heavily congested Shaikh Zayed Road when a motorcyclist, who was driving aggressively and changing lanes in negligent fashion, sustained serious injuries after hitting a stationary car.

On Wednesday, a man working on Al Khail Road died after being hit by a Mitsubishi truck.

The driver of the truck sustained moderate injuries after his vehicle overturned and hit the cement barrier on the side of the road, Major-General Al Zafein said.

A 16-year-old Emirati boy died on the same day after he was hit by a car at 11pm while cycling on a side road in Al Barsha.
Yesterday, two Asian pedestrians crossing the road in Al Qusais, near workers' accommodation compounds, suffered serious injuries after being run over by a car.

In a separate incident yesterday, at 6am, a woman sustained serious injuries when her Suzuki car overturned at the Civil Defence junction in Al Qusais.

The car swerved, causing the woman to lose control, before it hit the kerb and a metal barrier, resulted in it overturning.

The Traffic Department earlier announced that 12 people were killed in January and February this year, compared to 21 killed during the same period last year, but 14 more lost their lives in March bringing up the death toll this year to 25.
Dubai's top traffic prosecutor described them as "tragic traffic accidents".

Four people died in four separate accidents in less than 24 hours between Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning, according to Senior Chief Traffic prosecutor, Salah Bu Farousha, head of the Dubai Traffic Public Prosecution (TPP).

A 37-year-old Ethiopian taxi driver died on Tuesday morning after he lost control over his vehicle and veered off the road, before ploughing into a tree and signboard in Karama at 7.30 am.
