THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former Finance Minister K M Mani has said the Central and State governments should sacrifice additional fuel tax they collect. When Kerala is reeling under flood woes, the fuel prices have gone up. This hike will increase the price of essential commodities. Instead of passing this additional burden on to the people, the government should forgo additional fuel tax. Now, Kerala is the state that charges the highest tax for petrol and petrol products.

Mani said that the statements made by Central and State governments following the national hartal is puzzling. “The tax Centre gets from the petrol sale is Rs 19 .48 and the State gets Rs 20.39. From the Centre the State gets back 42 pc of basic Excise duty and Additional excise duty of Rs 8 (for State National highway maintenance). Thus over the last three financial years, the State got 1068 crore from the Road fund.  If both governments forgo additional taxes, the people will get a relief of Rs 7 per litre. When I was the finance minister, I had did away with additional tax and people got that benefit.”
