THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The UDF has announced their candidate for the Chengannur by-polls. D Vijakumar would be the UDF candidate replacing P C Vishnunath in the Chengannur constituency.

An agreement has been reached by the state Congress leadership. It is reported that an official announcement would be made within two days after getting the approval from the high command.

D Vijayakumar is a senior Congress leader from Chengannur, and the general approval that he has among the masses there was the reason behind his selection as the UDF candidate. His daughter Jyoti Vijayakumar was also considered as a probable candidate.

He is currently serving as Chengannur Agricultural Rural Development Bank president, and as national vice president of Akhila Bharatha Ayyappa Seva Sangham.

It is a matter of prestige for the UDF to regain the constituency which they lost to the CPM during the last elections.

CPM district secretary Saji Cheriyan has already been chosen as the LDF candidate in the constituency.

It is reported that the BJP candidate would be P S Sreedharan Pillai who contested the last elections also.
