PANAJI: AICC President Rahul Gandhi arrived in Goa late on Saturday to join his mother, who is on a private visit to the coastal state, to celebrate New Year.

Congress sources confirmed that Gandhi arrived late on Saturday and was expected to stay for a couple of days. A senior party leader said the newly appointed Congress President arrived by a private flight and would be joining his mother at a resort in South Goa. No party leader was scheduled to meet the Congress President or the former party president as the visit was private.

Sonia had arrived in Goa couple of days back. She had visited Goa in November 2016 along with her daughter Priyanka Gandhi. She had visited the state again after a month to usher in New Year. Speaking at an election rally at Margao in South Goa during Assembly elections last year, Gandhi had said that his mother loved "pollution-free" beaches of Goa and had wished to visit the state again. It is first visit of Gandhi after taking reigns of Congress.
