KOCHI:  An 84-year-old man died following an altercation with his son at his house at Devipadi in Piravom on Saturday. The dead was identified as Varkey aka Vakkachan and the son James aka Tison, 50, was arrested by the Piravom police shortly after the incident.

According to the police, James is an alcoholic and had a history of creating trouble under the influence of alcohol, as a result of which he was not allowed into the house of late.

On Saturday morning, he approached his father asking for some insurance documents in the name of his wife who is serving as a nurse abroad.

An altercation followed and James tried to beat up his father but was stopped by his mother who intervened.

Later, when Varkey stepped out of the house, James pushed him by the back of his head under the impact of which he hit against a wall and collapsed.

Though Varkey was rushed to a hospital nearby, he was declared brought dead.

James, who fled the scene in his car, was later nabbed by the police on the Koothattukulam-Thodupuzha road after 12 noon.

The police said that he was returning after visiting his sister staying in Thodupuzha.

The police were waiting for the post mortem report for a conclusive proof as to whether Varkey had died owning to a heart attack during the course of the altercation or under the impact of his son’s attack.
