THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The toll in the cyclone Ockhi rose to 32 in the state with the finding of three more decomposed bodies from Kochi shore, and the demise of another fisherman, who was under treatment, at the Medical College, on Tuesday. The Rescue agencies brought the three bodies to Vypin in Kochi. The other fisherman, died at the critical care unit of the medical college, was identified as Ratheesh (30) of Pulluvila, near Poonthura, here.

"Meanwhile, ten bodies kept in the Medical College and the General Hospital mortuaries are yet to be identified. DNA test is being carried for the identification of these bodies," the medical college sources said here.

In a major search operation, the coast guard rescued about 72 fishermen on Tuesday. Out of the 72, fourteen from Kerala and 58 from Tamil Nadu, and they were brought to Bithradweep of Lakshadweep in six boats. Another 11 persons missing from Ponnani were rescued by the Marine Enforcement. ADGP B Sandhya said the Malayali fishermen who reached Maharashtra coast will take more time to come back as they were not ready to leave their boats in the sea.

A section of fishermen rehabilitated in a relief camp in Chellanam of Kochi staged a sit-in-dharna in protest against the Government's apathy towards their demands seeking reconstruction of their houses destroyed in heavy rains. Talking to newspersons here, Archbishop Dr Soosa Pakiam said 108 fishermen from the coastal areas are still missing. The Government's failure in issuing advance cyclone warning to fishermen was the main reason for more deaths, he alleged.

He also urged the Government to announce a comprehensive package for the fishermen communities who lost everything in the calamity.

However, contrary to the claim of local churches, the Government said only 92 fishermen are missing. Meanwhile, the Government is preparing a special package for the fishermen who lost their boats and nets.

The package is likely to get the approval in the next cabinet meeting.
