THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said that the government would take necessary measures to rectify the discrepancies in the existing disaster management facilities.

He was talking to the media at Vizhinjam after meeting up with the families of the fishermen who went missing in the sea because of the Ockhi cyclone.

“The Ockhi cyclone has created great damages. The Centre must declare it as a national disaster. The state government will give due compensation to the tragedy stricken families of the fishermen who had to suffer because of the Ockhi cyclone. We would also get the support of the Central government for this,” he said.

Kodiyeri also said that most of the fishermen doesn’t have a proper house, and added that the Centre would be focusing to solve this issue.

He also listened to the complaints of people who lost their loved ones in the Ockhi cyclone, and consoled them.

Meanwhile, Vizhinjam diocese vicar Wilfred told Kodiyeri that the fishing community gets no help from the Coastal Police or the Coast Guard. He also complained that the men in the force were scared to carry out rescue operations.
